The song, the first release off Jepsen’s forthcoming album, is about moving on from heartbreak and being OK on your own.
“To me ‘Party For One’ is an anthem of what it is to celebrate time with yourself, which is a hard thing for people to really enjoy sometimes, and it’s something I’m learning to do more and more,” Jepsen says in a statement. “This song represents a lot of what this album is about for me which is romantic love but self-love too.”
The video for the track features Jepsen checking into a hotel room in New York City. As she settles in, we see the guests in the other rooms, who each have their own way of dealing with being alone. One guy takes a bath with a plate of spaghetti, a girl cries and yells at her TV, and an old lady strips down to her lingerie and starts unpacking her sex toys.
When the power goes out in the hotel, all the guests are forced to the lobby, where they throw a little party with each other.
Jepsen’s new album, a follow-up to 2015’s Emotion, will be released next year. Jepsen will perform “Party of One” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon November 5.
