Vanessa KonnLauren Jauregui officially released her first solo single, “Expectations,” on Wednesday and she says making music for herself, outside the confines of Fifth Harmony, has been “amazing” and fun.”
“I’m finding it incredibly liberating,” she tells ABC Radio. “I’m having a really amazing time kind of exploring myself creatively and figuring out who she is and what she wants to say, it’s been really fun.”
So, who IS Lauren? And what DOES she want to say?
“I dunno, I’m still discovering!” she laughs. “Every time I go into the studio, she has something new to say!”
While Lauren plans to keep releasing singles over the coming months, her debut album won’t be coming out until sometime next year — because she wants it to be just right.
“I’m letting this process be as organic as possible ’cause it’s the first time that I get to really delve into a…creative process since I’ve been in the industry,” she tells ABC Radio.
“So I’m just grateful to have the time to do it and to have the trust that I do from my label and from my fans” she adds. “So I just wanna give it my 110% to make sure it’s the best thing I’ve made.”
Lauren says “Expectations” is about her relationship with her real-life boyfriend Ty Dolla $ign — specifically one night when she was waiting for him to come home, and he didn’t show up or call because he got caught up in the studio.
As she tells Billboard, “I got all of the feelings out in the song, and then I called him right after and I was like, ‘Hey, I’m not mad anymore. I realized it was total bulls**t, my bad. I love you.’ … If I can get my emotions out in songs instead of acting crazy, that’s fantastic.”
