5SOS celebrate “an incredible milestone”: their first top 10 “Billboard” hit

Alexandra GavilletMore than four years after they first cracked the U.S. chart, 5 Seconds of Summer has finally achieved a major career goal: The group’s song “Youngblood” has reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Drummer Ashton Irwin took to Twitter to celebrate their milestone with an emotional post.

“Today our band @5sos is #10 on the Billboard Hot 100,” he wrote, “This is the first time in our career we’ve ever achieved this, an incredible milestone for me personally as a songwriter, visionary, and as a soul that wants to make music for all the lovers, fighters, and everyone everywhere.”

Bass player Calum Hood retweeted Ashton’s post and added, “Proud of you.”  Ashton and Calum co-wrote the song with singer Luke Hemmings and a few other people.

The first U.S. hit for 5SOS was “She Looks So Perfect,” which peaked at #24 in 2014. That same year,  “Amnesia” reached #16, the band’s best performance on the chart until this week, when “Youngblood” reached #10.

While the Australian band hasn’t had a lot of success with singles, their albums have all been chart-toppers. Their 2014 self-titled debut album, their 2015 sophomore album Sounds Good Feels Good and this year’s Youngblood have all reached #1, making them the first Australian act ever to have three #1 albums on the Billboard 200.

Tonight, 5SOS continue their Meet You There tour in support of Youngblood in Rogers, Arkansas.
