Tori Kelly‘s new gospel album Hiding Place is her first collection of new music since her 2015 debut Unbreakable Smile. Tori admits that for a “split second,” she wondered if her fans would be into what she calls her “passion project,” but it turns out she had nothing to worry about.
Hiding Place debuted at #1 on the Billboard Gospel Album chart, and Tori says so far, she’s gotten nothing but “really positive feedback” on the album. While she realizes that “people don’t all have the same beliefs,” Tori notes, “It’s such a huge part of my life, I feel like everyone can still get something out of it, because there’s so much heart and so much passion behind it.”
Tori also feels that, with the state the world is in today, the album offers “messages of hope that can hopefully encourage people.”
The singer collaborated on her dream project with her idol, gospel legend Kirk Franklin. Tori says at first, she was a little starstruck by the Grammy-winning star, but, she says, “He’s really good at knocking that down pretty quickly, ’cause he’s just funny and so outgoing. I kinda forgot, like, ‘Oh, you’re Kirk Franklin!'”
Tori will kick off a tour in support of Hiding Place on October 18, but promises that she’ll have some pop music for her fans in the near future.
“I will say there’s definitely stuff that’s done, ’cause I’ve been writing a lot for the last couple of years,” she tells ABC Radio. “This gospel project really just kinda snuck in in the middle of all of that. So yeah, there’ll be stuff coming out soon.”
She laughs, “My fans hate the word ‘soon'” but that’s the only word I can give ’em right now!”
