Can Maroon 5 break hip-hop's lock on the top of the chart?

222 Records/Interscope RecordsMaroon 5′s latest hit “Girls Like You” has been stalled at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the past five weeks, stuck behind Drake‘s “In My Feelings.”  But now, Billboard reports that Adam Levine and the guys have a chance to break the Toronto rapper’s lock on the top of the chart.

According to Billboard, this week “In My Feelings,” which as been #1 for nine weeks straight, is only slightly ahead of “Girls Like You” when it comes to radio airplay, streaming and downloads.  If “Girls Like You” manages to overtake “In My Feelings,” it’ll become Maroon 5’s fourth #1 hit, and their first since 2012’s “One More Night.”

More importantly, though, if “Girls Like You” hits #1, it will end the streak of rap songs topping the Hot 100 for a record 33 straight weeks.  Of those 33 weeks, Drake’s responsible for 28 of them, with three different songs: “God’s Plan,” “In My Feelings” and “Nice for What.”

The other number ones in that 33-week streak: Post Malone and Ty Dolla $ign‘s “Psycho,” XXXTentacion‘s “Sad!,” Childish Gambino‘s “This Is America” and Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin‘s “I Like It.”

Speaking of Cardi, if “Girls Like You,” which she’s featured on, hits #1, it’ll be her third chart-topper, after “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It.”
