Vincent PetersIt’s been sixteen years, but Kelly Clarkson is still thanking fans for allowing her to have “A Moment Like This.”
On September 4, 2002, Kelly was crowned the very-first winner of American Idol. In a tweet Tuesday, she wrote, “16 years ago today the people of America changed my life and I will be forever grateful & appreciative.”
Since her victory, Kelly’s gone on to become a multi-platinum selling, chart-topping Grammy winner and a TV personality, as well as a wife, mother and stepmom of four. That’s in addition to being a figure of female empowerment and a pop music icon. Amazingly, she’s managed all this while maintaining her down-to-earth, everywoman image.
Notably, in that same tweet, before she mentioned American Idol, Kelly also gave a shoutout to Nike for tapping Colin Kaepernick as one of the faces of its 30th anniversary campaign.
“Thank you @Nike for simply backing what you believe in,” Kelly wrote. “One of the best parts about this country is the freedom we have to express ourselves.”
Responses to Kelly’s tweet ranged from fans celebrating her American Idol win, to those thanking her for the Nike support, to those decrying her supposed “anti-patriotism.”
