5 Seconds of Summer score with “Youngblood”

Alexandra GavilletWhile 5 Seconds of Summer have scored three #1 albums, they haven’t had the same kind of chart-topping streak with their singles.  However, that may be changing.

Billboard notes that the band’s latest hit “Youngblood” is their first top 10 on Billboard‘s Pop Songs chart, which measures radio airplay.  The highest they’d gotten previously was #15 in 2015 with “She’s Kinda Hot.”

On the Billboard Hot 100, which measures airplay, streaming and sales, “Youngblood” is the band’s second top 20 hit, following 2014’s “Amnesia.

“Youngblood” is the title track of 5SOS’ third album, which debuted at #1 in June.  The first single from the album was “Want You Back,” but fans seemed to like “Youngblood” better, so the band’s record label started threw its support behind that track.

“We made the decision to pivot to ‘Youngblood,'” an exec from their label tells Billboard.  “We couldn’t ignore the data.”  But, he added, “The band made a hit record. It connected. None of this happens without that.”
