Sara Bareilles talks working with J.J. Abrams; plans to release new music by end of year

Mark Sagliocco/FilmMagicFresh off her Emmy nomination for Jesus Christ Superstar, Sara Bareilles is dishing on her next TV project with J.J. Abrams.

The singer talks to Variety about how the upcoming Apple TV series, Little Voice, came to be.

“I encountered J.J. at an event and we got to talking. And he’s really always wanted to do something about music,” she explains. “Meanwhile, my partner Jessie [Nelson] was developing a singer-songwriter show and we all just merged forces.”

Sara says the musical dramedy, which explores what it’s like to be living in New York in your early 20s, is still in the “beginning stages.” She’ll be writing original music for the series as well as executive-producing.

In the meantime, she’s also working on a new album and hopes to share at least one of two new songs by the end of the year.

“It’s a rootsy record that is really reflective of my feelings about the world right now,” she tells Variety. “It’s a return to a singer-songwriter record for me.”

Sara’s last album release was What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress in 2015.
