Bryce Vine talks “fulfilling” success of “Drew Barrymore” and why actress inspired the song title

Frank MaddocksBryce Vine is having a great summer. Not only has his song “Drew Barrymore” been climbing the charts, he’ll also be delivering his first-ever live TV performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers tonight.  The former Glee Project contestant says that while he’d hoped for a positive reaction to the song, he never could have predicted its success.

“No, but it’s great,” he tells ABC Radio. “You know, you write songs and you hope that people pay attention and listen and are excited about it. It’s like part of what makes it fun. So now that it is [successful], it’s just super fulfilling, I’ll say that.”

The sexy love song — co-written by Julia Michaels — has Bryce singing about his perfect girl and their passionate relationship with lyrics like “‘Cause you’re the next Drew Barry/And I want more.”

Bryce’s song also unintentionally shares its title with a song by R&B singer SZA. So what makes Drew Barrymore, the actress, such a musical muse these days?

“I mean, it’s a great title,” he says. “It’s just a great, strong title. It’s like if you named a song ‘Audrey Hepburn.’ At this point, she’s kind of Hollywood royalty. Even if you haven’t seen a movie she’s in, you know her name. So she’s kind of a fun person to compare things to.”

While the two songs both name-drop the star of hits like The Wedding Singer, they couldn’t be more different, so Bryce says he’s not sure a mash-up of the two would work — though he’d be down for a collaboration.

“I would love to work with SZA anyway,” he says of the Grammy-nominated star. “She’s dope.”

Bryce will play a couple of music festivals later this month before joining MAX on tour this fall.
