XXXTentacion's “Sad!” tops Billboard Hot 100, rapper is first lead artist to do so posthumously since 1997

Bad Vibes Forever/ Empire A week after his untimely death, XXXTentacion is number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The slain rapper posthumously tops the chart with his single “Sad!,” which jumps from #52 to #1. The song previously peaked at #7 on March 31.  The rapper was shot dead June 18 in Deerfield Beach, FL.

X is the first lead artist to hit #1 posthumously since 1997, when The Notorious B.I.G. topped the charts with “Mo Money Mo Problems.”  He’s the eighth solo artist overall to have reached the top after his death. 

The other artists who hit #1 after they passed away are John Lennon, Jim Croce, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Soulja Slim and Static Major.  However, those last two did it only as featured artists on songs by, respectively, Juvenile and Lil Wayne.

“Sad!” is from X’s sophomore album ?, which debuted at #1 when it was released in March. The song is also #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the Hot Rap Songs chart.
