BryantBazzi‘s breakthrough hit “Mine” is a love song that compares the object of his affection to a certain Grammy-winning diva — he sings, “You on fire, you a star just like Mariah.” According to Bazzi, name-checking Mariah Carey was sort of accidental, but he admits he does admire Mimi for paving the way for young artists like him.
“I actually was just free-styling and it came out,” Bazzi says of the Mariah shout-out. “But I’m all about respecting the O.G.’s and showing love to people who’ve done what I’m trying to do right now. So yeah, big love to Mariah!”
Another artist Bazzi has big love and respect for is Taylor Swift. Back in February, she included “Mine” on a Spotify playlist called “Songs Taylor Loves.” She’s just one of several artists who supported Bazzi early on, including Camila Cabello, who talked him up in interviews and then invited him to tour with her, and BTS, who tweeted the artwork for “Mine” to their millions of followers.
“They were really cool for me, just mentally, ’cause those are people I respect a lot…that’s my peers in the industry,” Bazzi says of getting co-signs from such big stars. “So to get looks from them like that means a lot — especially from Taylor.”
“I’m such a big fan,” he gushes. “She writes all of her music and she’s such a businesswoman and runs ‘Taylor Swift’ so well…that respect was really cool.”
This Sunday, Bazzi will perform at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, TN. His solo headlining tour, which also includes appearances at Lollapalooza and Montreal’s Osheaga festival, continues through September.
