Carlos SerraoAs promised, John Mayer has released a new song, his first new music since 2017’s album The Search for Everything.
The romantic track is called “New Light,” and in it, John tries to persuade a girl to see him as a potential lover, and not just keep him in the “friend zone.”
“We talk and then you walk away every day/Oh, you don’t think twice ’bout me/And maybe you’re right to doubt me, but/if you give me just one night/You gonna see me in a new light,” John sings.
“I tried to make a song that was all the best melodic stuff from the ’80s,” John explained in an interview he did Thursday to promote the song. He compared it to the 1983 Paul McCartney/Michael Jackson duet “Say Say Say” and the 1983 hit “Break My Stride,” by Matthew Wilder.
In the same interview, John said more new music would be coming this year. And as far as whether or not there will be an album, he said, “Yeah, I think so. I mean, I’m gonna keep making more of these [songs]….all I care about is making cool music.”
“New Light” is being released on John’s own label, Snack Money. He’ll be on tour from May 30 to July 14 with the Grateful Dead offshoot group, Dead & Company.
