Julian Berman for First We Feast On yesterday’s Season 5 finale of Hot Ones, a YouTube series from the Complex brand First We Feast, John Mayer ate hot wings while discussing a variety of topics, including his opinion that a certain Canadian pop star is the best he’s ever seen at creating memorable songs.
During the show, host Sean Evans, asked John to explain why he once described Justin Bieber as a “melody wizard” on Instagram.
“I’ve been in the studio with him before and his ability to craft melodies, I’ve never seen anybody better,” gushed John. “His ear is so good at writing them. Writing them on the spot. Lyrics are harder for everybody, but him humming? Him just off the dome? Fantastic. He’s really really really really good.”
That’s why, John says, he hopes that Justin’s able to survive his incredible fame to become the artist he’s meant to be.
“When you’re that gifted, the reality distortion around you is seeking to crush that gift, and you become a warrior to try to…fight out, so you can go on to make all these really, really important great records,” John explained.
“I just look at it like ‘Go, Justin go!'” he continued. ‘Like, if you can get through the reality distortion experiment so that you can then be leveled out, and just make the greatest music you’re meant to make, that’s important to me….that really gifted people make it out of that gauntlet.”
On the same episode of Hot Ones, John also talked about his love for stand-up comedy, his favorite chord progressions, and why Nickelback gets a bad rap. You can watch it now on YouTube.
