Every American Idol season has featured theme weeks, and this season’s no different: On Sunday night, the contestants will tackle the songs of Prince — even the ones you wouldn’t think could pull it off, like country singer Caleb Lee Hutchinson.
Billboard has a list of who’s performing which song, and since Prince’s songs aren’t easy to sing, some contestants have cleverly chosen songs that Prince wrote, but were hits for other artists. For example, Catie Turner is singing “Manic Monday,” a hit for The Bangles written by the Purple One.
Meanwhile, Maddie Poppe is singing “Nothing Compares 2 U,” written by Prince but a hit for Sinead O’Connor. And Cade Foehner is singing “Jungle Love,” a hit for The Time that was written and produced by Prince.
By the way, Prince himself appeared on American Idol back in 2006 to perform “Lolita” and “Satisfied,” both from his album 3121. He died in 2016.
In addition to the Prince songs, the contestants will each sing a song from the year they were born. American Idol airs Sunday night on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.
Here’s the list of who’s singing which Prince songs:
Cade Foehner: “Jungle Love”
Caleb Lee Hutchinson: “When Doves Cry”
Catie Turner: “Manic Monday”
Gabby Barrett: “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore”
Jurnee: “Kiss”
Maddie Poppe: “Nothing Compares 2 U”
Michael J. Woodard: “I Would Die 4 U”
