Judge Lionel Richie says “American Idol” top 10 talent is “unbelievable”

ABC/Eric McCandless

Sunday night on ABC, the American Idol top 10 will sing for America’s vote, and at the end of the show, we’ll learn which three contestants are going home.  But since judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry personally selected half of the top 10, it’s no wonder they’re bullish on the group who’ll be taking the stage on Sunday.

“We’ve lost a lot of great talent but what we have in that top 10, is unbelievable,” Lionel tells ABC Radio.  Luke agrees, “It’s what we need for [to have] a huge American Idol [winner].”

Luke is especially supportive of Dennis Lorenzo, one of the four the judges chose to put in the top 10 after America failed to vote them in.  “I mean, I’m so invested in him from day one because of so many tricks up his sleeve, he can play guitar, he can dance,” Luke raves.

Besides Dennis, the other contestants the judges chose were Venezuelan immigrant Michelle Sussett, gay Army wife Jurnee and drag queen Ada Vox. You could make the case that the judges chose them because they have the most interesting backstories, but Katy Perry reveals that in fact, she, Lionel and Luke were pretty much in the dark about all of that until just recently.

“The interesting thing that is when we started watching the show, we didn’t know all the information,” she tells ABC Radio. “We only ever get them to walk in, sing….we only get to judge them based on their talent. We don’t get the back story. We get one sentence, one line.”

“We’re only here to give criticism and put them through based on their talent, that’s it,” she stresses. “So we’re watching the show with America for the first time and it’s, like, blowing our minds!”
