Photo by Lagerhaus/WireImageAfter telling the audience at R&B duo Majid Jordan‘s concert in Toronto Thursday night that he would do so, Drake dropped a brand new track on Friday night — as well as a new video.
“Nice For What” not only features samples from Lauren Hill’s 1998 hit “Ex-Factor,” but its sumptuous video features appearances from some of the most recognizable women in entertainment, from ballerina Misty Copeland to Tracee Ellis Ross and her black-ish co-star Yara Shahidi, as well as Olivia Wilde, Issa Rae, Rashida Jones, and Tiffany Haddish.
News of Drake dropping a new song made headlines in late March, As previously reported, a screenshot of an Instagram live chat from producer Murda Beatz — captured by Real Rap magazine at the time — showed a comment from Drizzy that read, “New single soon produced by Chef Murda.”
Murda Beatz and Drake are longtime collaborators: Murda produced songs for Drizzy such as “Portland” and “No Long Talk.”
Drake’s God’s Plan scored its 10th week at the top of Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart Monday. Thanks to the single and Drake’s 2016 hit, “One Dance,” he became the first lead solo male with two 10-week Billboard Hot 100 number-ones. There have only been six acts overall to score at least two 10-week number ones. The others are Boyz II Men, The Black Eyed Peas, Santana, Pharrell Williams, and Mariah Carey.
God’s Plan is also just the fifth song in history to spend its first 10 weeks on the chart at number one, and the first by a solo male since Elton John and Puff Daddy both did it in 1997.
