Getty Images via ABCDemi Lovato’s mom, Dianna De La Garza, is opening up about the domestic abuse she endured at the hands of Demi’s father.
People reports that Dianna reveals in her upcoming memoir, Falling with Wings: A Mother’s Story, that one time Patrick Lovato slammed a door so hard on her hand that she lost a finger.
She says that despite the horrific injury, she decided not to leave him because shortly after, she found out she was pregnant with Demi. She finally found the courage to walk away in 1994, when Demi was 18 months old.
Dianna adds that her children’s well-being was what ultimately led her to end the marriage.
“When I realized they were not safe anymore, no matter how much I loved this person and wanted things to change, I knew I had to get out,” she says.
Falling with Wings: A Mother’s Story comes out March 6.
