The singer posted a childhood photo of Rih-Rih on his Instagram page, along with the caption “HAPPY BIRTHDAY @badgirlriri.”
The post received over 630,000 likes, but also some angry comments from Rihanna fans who haven’t forgiven Brown for the brutal assault of his then-girlfriend back in 2009.
“KEEP RIHANNA’S NAME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH,” one person commented. Another wrote, “Delete this?? Abusing women and continuing to stalk them long after they’ve moved on is creepy and sad, not funny or cute.”
A third fan added, “So we just gonna pretend like 2009 didn’t happen?”
Brown pleaded guilty to the assault, which occurred about a year into the couple’s relationship. He accepted a plea deal that included nearly five years of probation and one year of domestic violence counseling.
