Maren Morris hit all the right notes on Zedd's “The Middle”

Nick WalkerIf you’re wondering how country superstar Maren Morris landed on Zedd‘s new dance-y pop track, “The Middle,” she simply hit all the right notes.

“They were just having a hard time landing on the right voice and they wanted someone really soulful, but could also hit all the notes,” Maren explains to ABC Radio. “So it landed on me and they reached out and I heard it and initially I was like, ‘Wow, I’m not used to singing this high up. But I will tackle it!'”

Maren says despite “The Middle” being a different song for her – both vocally and genre-wise – she had no doubts about doing it.

“Every female artist that [Zedd] works with on each song is just such a cool collaboration so when he sent me the song before the New Year, I just instantly knew that I wanted to be on it,” she says.

After she agreed, the rest of the process was a whirlwind. The song came out on January 23, and the video debuted during the Grammys telecast on January 28.

“It happened pretty quickly once he came to Nashville and recorded vocals with me,” she says. “The rollout of like the music video being shot and then four days later it premiering on the Grammys, it all happened really quick so it’s cool that everyone’s getting to hear it now.”

The song, which also features the musical duo Grey, is currently climbing the charts. Its catchy melody has also made it the soundtrack for Target’s spring style marketing campaign.

“It’s one of those songs that makes you wanna dance and that’s the best thing about [Zedd] is he’s just got that down to a science,” Maren says.
