Sam Smith‘s single “Too Good at Goodbyes” was eligible for a Grammy nomination this year, but didn’t receive one. Even so, Sam’s performing at this year’s ceremony, while other big-name nominees, such as Taylor Swift, Lorde and Ed Sheeran, apparently aren’t.
Asked to explain Sam’s presence on the January 28 telecast, Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich tells Variety, “We [include non-nominees] from time to time…so it’s not unusual. There’s no specific reason other than he’s a past Grammy winner, he cleaned up a couple of years ago, and we thought kindly about putting him on the show.”
In 2015, Sam won four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Stay with Me.”
Asked by Variety if there’s a chance that Taylor, Ed and Lorde could still be added to the show, Ehrlich laughs, “Nope, I can’t say officially or unofficially — but nice try! That was a good one.”
The Grammys air Sunday night, January 28, on CBS, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.
