Justin Timberlake describes “Man of the Woods” as mixing “heritage” with “something modern”

Ryan McGinleyMan of the Woods is what happened when Justin Timberlake’s Tennessee roots collided with his love of modern grooves. In a new mini-documentary on YouTube, the singer takes fans inside the making of his new album and explains its eclectic influences.

The black-and-white clip opens with Justin laying down a distinctly country melody over a hip-hop-inspired beat.

“I think the album has a wide range of sonics to it, but I guess I would describe it as modern Americana with 808s,” Justin says. In case you’re not up on the music lingo, the 808 is a drum machine often used in hip-hop.

The documentary shows Justin creating tunes on both guitar and piano, while working with producers Timbaland and Pharrell Williams.

“You talk about those, like, Southern guitars and that sound that feels like heritage, that is me exercising my love for where I came from,” the Memphis native says. “But then you mix it with something modern, that’s just like, where we are today.”

He says the songs, which we hear snippets of in the doc, are “meant to be heard outside even more than inside.”

Justin previously said his Man of the Woods tour would “bring the outdoors in.” Now, he’s giving fans more chances to find out what exactly that means.

He added 10 new shows to the tour, which kicks off March 13 in Toronto. The new dates include second shows in Toronto, New York, Chicago, Boston, Montreal, Las Vegas, San Jose and Los Angeles. He’s also added shows in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Tickets for the second shows in previously announced cities go on sale January 22, while the Pennsylvania dates go on sale January 29.

Man of the Woods comes out February 2.
