ABC/ Paula LoboSia fans have issued a petition asking the singer to step down as spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam lipstick because of the company’s policy on animal testing.
While MAC doesn’t test on animals in the U.S., it retails in China, where animal testing is allowed. Fans expressed their disapproval when the collaboration was announced in November, given that Sia is a vegan and fierce animal activist.
The petition had gathered around 54,000 signatures as of noon Thursday.
“I am a big Sia fan. I especially love that she is vegan and really seems to support animal rights,” petition author Kelsey Bourgeois writes on the petition site Care2. “That’s why I was so shocked that she agreed to be the sponsor for this year’s MAC Viva Glam lipstick. It’s to raise money for a great cause (AIDS research), but I wish Sia had taken the opportunity to tell MAC not to test on animals.”
After the initial backlash, Sia defended herself on Twitter, writing, “Like MAC, I believe makeup shouldn’t be tested on animals. MAC does not test on animals and is advocating change in countries like China where animal testing exists.”
