ABC/Paula LoboSince 1973, having the #1 single in the U.K. on Christmas Day has been a milestone accomplishment for British artists, which is why Ed Sheeran is currently gunning for that spot right now. However, he may have to fight off some competition — from himself.
Currently, Ed’s single “Perfect” is in the #1 position, helped by the fact that he’s released two different versions of it in the last month: one a duet with Beyoncé, and the other a duet with opera star Andrea Bocelli.
However, according to the U.K.’s Official Charts Company, another song is currently outperforming “Perfect” on streaming: namely “River,” a song from Eminem‘s new album that features Ed Sheeran.
Offering some competition is a re-release of Wham!‘s classic “Last Christmas.” While it’s been a best-seller for years, it’s never hit #1, which is why a campaign has been launched to get it to #1 to mark the one-year anniversary of Wham! frontman George Michael’s death. He died on Christmas Day 2016.
