Katharine McPhee sang standards on American Idol, but now she’s recorded a whole album of them. I Fall in Love Too Easily features Kat taking on classics like “All the Way,” “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “Night and Day.” She says she’s finally found the genre that’s right for her.
“It just feels natural to me…,” the Scorpion star tells ABC Radio. “[Before], I just thought, “Oh, you’re too young to do this kind of music.’ And it was always right in front of me.”
The idea was to make an intimate-sounding album with simple arrangements came from legendary producer Don Was, who saw Katharine sing on a Frank Sinatra TV tribute. Kat explains, “Don originally said, ‘I wanna make a record that people can make out to!'”
Katharine says the album’s title reflects her own love life. While making it, she says, “I would come in with my little dating sagas, and it was always, ‘I just met somebody and we were getting married!’ And then, like, a month later…I learned the person was completely wrong for me.”
Katharine performs Monday on Live with Kelly & Ryan. And speaking of Mr. Seacrest, Kat says she’s “oddly curious” about ABC’s reboot of American Idol, because her pal Lionel Richie told her that he and the other judges have great chemistry.
“I thought I wouldn’t be interested, and I’m very interested,” she says.
But Kat also has her own idea for an Idol reboot:
“I’ve had crazy dreams about [them] reviving the show with me, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry [and] Jennifer Hudson…and having [us] all compete against each other and have America vote all over again,” she laughs.
“American Idol: Battle of the Superstars! Maybe I should produce it!”
