NBC UniversalThe knockout rounds continued on Monday’s edition of The Voice, a night that saw coach Miley Cyrus stealing one of Adam Levine’s artists.
Artists from Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson’s teams also duked it out to see who would make it to the live rounds.
To make things even more competitive, each artist had to watch his or her opponent rehearse.
Advising the artists for the knockout rounds was season-14 coach, Kelly Clarkson.
Here are the highlights from Tuesday night’s episode:
Up first, representing Team Miley, was Brooke Simpson tackling Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” facing off against Stephan Marcellus, singing “Impossible,” by Shontelle. During rehearsals, Kelly and Miley advised Brooke to be “less swaggy” and not over-sing. The recommendation for Marcellus was to sing the song in a lower key. Miley declared Brooke the winner. She advances to the live rounds. Stephan went home.
Blake’s team was up next, with Anna Catherine DeHart covering Faith Hill’s “Breathe” and Mitchell Lee performing Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be.” Following their knockout performances, the coaches were split, with Jennifer and Adam leaning towards Mitchell and Miley favoring Anna Catherine. Blake declared Lee the winner. He moves on to the live rounds, while DeHart’s time on The Voice came to an end.
Next up, representing Team Jennifer, was Jeremiah Miller with “Sorry,” by Justin Bieber, facing off against Noah Mac singing James Bay’s “Hold Back the River.” The two singers were paired, according to Jennifer, so she could determine which one was “ready.” Afterwards, Miley called Noah’s performance her favorite. Adam and Blake also thought Noah killed it. Hudson picked Mac, explaining that he “sleeps [and] eats music.” Noah advances to the live rounds. Miller was sent packing.
Kathrina Feigh, belting out Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire,” and Keisha Renee, singing Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance, followed for Team Blake. The two were paired because both were “big, soulful singers.” Clarkson thought the singers were evenly matched. The winner, she said, addressing the camera, would come down to which one didn’t cave under pressure. After both artists performed, the other judges were undecided as to who won, but Blake gave Keisha the edge, citing the soulful sound she brings to country music. She moves on, while Kathrina goes home.
The knockouts continued with Team Miley’s Moriah Formica, performing Kellie Clarkson’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” taking on Whitney Fenimore, covering “Calling All Angels by Train. Kelly warned Moriah not to be too “guarded,” and Miley urged Whitney not to let her nerves get the better of her. Afterwards, Adam couldn’t decide who won, but Blake and Jennifer gave the round to Moriah. Miley chose 16-year-old Moriah for her presence, her voice and her attitude. She continues in the competition. Whitney goes home.
The last pairing of the night was between Team Adam’s Adam Pearce, singing Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” and Emily Luther tackling Pink’s “Glitter in the Air.” Levine, addressing the camera, said he wanted to see “who’s gonna show up and who’s not.” He advised Pearce to lose the guitar he was playing, and Emily not to be “too perfect.” Adam gave the round to Emily, who he called a “showstopper.” She advances to the live rounds.
However, as Adam was walking off the stage, he was stolen at the last minutes by Miley, who explained that Pearce just needed “a bigger stage, more production and fire.” He moves on to the love rounds.
Also advancing on Monday was Team Adam’s Jon Mero, who ousted Dylan Gerard.
The Voice knockout rounds conclude Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
