Atlantic RecordsMany celebrities took to social media to express horror at the mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday, but the guys in Why Don’t We lived through it. That night, they were at the Blue Man Group show at the Luxor Hotel, right across the street from the country music festival the shooter fired on.
“They turned on the lights and they’re like, ‘OK, we’re on lockdown right now, everybody stay calm,'” recalls Zach Herron. “Then one of our managers actually sent us a text and said, ‘Yo guys, watch out, there’s a shooter on the loose.'”
“The craziest part was just being in there and our internet connection wasn’t great, so searching things was taking really long,” continues Corbyn Besson. “My texts wouldn’t even send [and] I was…trying to talk to my mom and dad.”
They found out how many people had been shot only hours later. Meanwhile, their fans, who knew they were at the Luxor, were worried sick.
Jack Avery says, “They were saying they weren’t going to sleep until they knew we were OK, which was awesome.”
The guys are still shaken and want to help the victims any way they can.
“They were innocent,” Jack says. “They were probably just coming to have a great time in Las Vegas. I don’t understand.”
In happier news, on Thursday afternoon, Why Don’t We made their debut on MTV’s newly rebooted TRL — a show they were too young to watch the first time around.
“My mom tells me stories all the time about TRL and Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears and all of them on there,” Zach laughs. “She gave me a big talk about how she used to love the show and watch it all the time and how crazy it is I’m gonna be on it.”
