PRETTYMUCH make debut on MTV's TRL: “To be on the same platform as the greats is surreal”

Nev TodorovicIn the early 2000’s, the place to get your boy band fix was MTV’s TRL.  Now that the show’s back, it’s only fitting that a new boy band be one of the first guests.  PRETTYMUCH, who are backed by Simon Cowell, performed on the new TRL Tuesday,  couldn’t get over the fact that they were doing the same show as their musical heroes.

“I’m obsessed with Backstreet Boys, so I watched the re-runs [of TRL] on YouTube,” PRETTYMUCH member Edwin Honoret told ABC Radio.  “So it’s just crazy, ’cause to be on the same stage and platform as the greats…it’s kinda, like, surreal.”

The members of PRETTYMUCH were only 9 and 11 years old when the original TRL went off the air in 2008, but group member Brandon Arreaga says he did tune in a few times.

“I remember one of the last ones that I saw was Jonas Brothers,” he laughs. “I think I caught kinda the end episodes of it.”

PRETTYMUCH fit right in on TRL with their debut single, “Would You Mind,” which is reminiscent of ‘N SYNC, Bell Biv Devoe and Backstreet.  As group member Austin Porter explains, that was deliberate.

“We wanted to have a very retro vibe with it,” he tells ABC Radio. “When it was presented to us, we were just like,  ‘Yo, this is crazy. It reminds me of music from the ’90s.'” I grew up listening to a lot of that because of my dad.”

“And it’s very dance-oriented,” he adds, “So that was always my favorite part about it.  We would just get down to it…bringin’ back some old school moves!”

PRETTYMUCH shows off those moves in their “Would You Mind” video.  You can also check out their new song, “Teacher,” which was just released.
