NBC UniversalThe Voice continued on Monday night with another hour of blind auditions.
Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Miley Cyrus and new coach Jennifer Hudson were back in their spinning chairs, trying to add to their teams. Two of the night’s biggest artists went to Miley and JHud.
The Voice honored victims a gunman who opened fire at a country music festival near Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay casino, killing at least 59 people and and injuring 527 others with a graphic at the start of the show that read: “We are all profoundly shaken by the horrific tragedy that occurred last night in Las Vegas, which was especially heartbreaking knowing that people were gathered in celebration of life, love and music.
“The Voice stands in unity with all those affected, and hopes the power of music will continue to inspire, comfort and bring us together.”
Here are the highlights of Monday night’s episode:
Nashville resident by way of Iowa, Adam Cunningham, put his country/soul spin on The Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider,” creating the first of several intense battles between Blake and Jennifer. Cunningham already had the country part of his voice down, according to Hudson, but needed her help with the soul part. Blake, praising Adam’s power and pitch control, said he would love to work with him. Cunningham chose Team Blake.
Hannah Mrozak, 18, was inspired to try out for The Voice by her brother, who later committed suicide. Her cover of “Starving” by Hailee Steinfeld and Grey featuring Zedd convinced Adam, Jennifer and Blake to turn around. Noting that Hannah is a pure pop singer, Adam argued that he was the best choice because that’s “all me, all day.” After Blake told Hanna that her comfort level on stage made him believe that she sounded like “an industry pro,” possibly a backup singer, Jennifer turned the compliment into an insult, arguing that Mrozak is a “soloist.” Adam came out the winner of this battle, claiming Hannah for his team.
Davon Fleming auditioned with Amy Winehouse’s “Me & Mr. Jones.” All four coaches turned their chairs around for the R&B singer, but Jennifer made an instant connection with Davon when they discovered a shared admiration for Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You.” Miley pointed out that it was her Godmother, Dolly Parton wrote the song. However, Cyrus didn’t stand a chance when Hudson got up and dueted with Fleming on the song. Davon is a member of Team JHud.
Rocker Moriah Formica, 16, had her first brush with fame when Stryper’s Michael Sweet invited her to sing on his solo album. She further demonstrated her undeniable talent with her version of Heart’s “Crazy on You,” which got all four coaches to turn around. Adam called Moriah a “pint-sized powerhouse,” adding later that she was “the next great rock & roll singer.” Miley argued that her experience as a teen singer made her the best choice to help coach the young singer and provide her with “big sister advice.” Moriah chose Miley’s team, explaining afterward that their child star connection sealed the deal.
The Voice blind auditions continue Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
