John Shearer/Getty Images via ABCCamila Cabello‘s solo debut album The Hurting. The Healing. The Loving. is due sometime this fall, and you may want to pore over the lyrics of one particular song when it arrives.
According to Rolling Stone, Camila wrote one of the songs, “In the Dark,” the day after this year’s Grammy Awards, about “an encounter with an unnamed famous boy she had met at an after-party.” Let the guessing begin!
Other songs on the album are much older than that one — Camila tells Rolling Stone she wrote the lyrics for “I Have Questions” a year and a half ago, for example.
“It’s kind of like having a huge block of marble and carving out a statue,” she explains of the process of writing material based on the last few years of her life. “The final product becomes more clear to you the more you carve at it and work on it.”
She adds, “Through trial and error, I’ve written enough finished songs to be able to say ‘Okay, this is me. This sounds like me and only me, and this separates me from what other people are doing.'”
As for why she left Fifth Harmony, one reason was Camila’s desire for artistic independence.
“[The songs were] mostly written by other people,” she tells Rolling Stone. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, it’s just not for me.”
