Ed Sheeran debuts new single on “Good Morning America,” says his success is “a bit ridiculous”

ABC/Paula LoboEd Sheeran‘s success in the last year or so has been pretty impressive: his album Divide is multi-platinum, his 12-week #1 “Shape of You” is now the most-streamed track of all time, and he plays to sell-out crowds all over the world. It’s no wonder Ed himself thinks his accomplishments are “ridiculous.”

Appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday, Ed admitted that he never could have foreseen himself becoming a global star.  “I didn’t even see having success outside of England as an option,” he said. “As a singer/songwriter, the goals in England are playing small theaters — that’s, like, the peak — and maybe going gold on one or two albums.”

“So this is like…it’s all a bit ridiculous!” he laughed.

In fact, Ed said that just a few years ago, his only goals were to have a gold album and to play one particular theater in England.  “Both of them happened in the same week,” he laughs. “And then after that, I didn’t really have any goals left!  All the things that have been happening haven’t been things that I’ve expected to happen.”

Among those things that are happening is the announcement that the Grammy-winner will embark on his first North American stadium tour next year.  He’s pretty excited about it.

“I did Gillette Stadium in 2015, that was like a kind of taste,” Ed said, referring to the stadium where the New England Patriots play.  “But it’s like, for me, playing the coast is one thing, but being able to play middle America at that level is pretty cool.”

Ed also debuted his new single, “Perfect” on Good Morning America.
