Justin Timberlake guests on new Foo Fighters album, “Concrete and Gold”

Kevin Mazur/AMA2013/WireImageA while back, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters said that the “biggest pop star in the world” had sung backing vocals on their new album, Concrete and Gold.  Well, we’ve just learned that the person Dave was talking about might be Justin Timberlake.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Dave says he ran into Timberlake while the Foos were recording Concrete and Gold at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, and the two started to hang out together.

“We’d drink whiskey in the parking lot,” Grohl says. “He was really, really cool. Then the night before his last day, he says, ‘Can I sing on your record? I don’t want to push it, but — I just want to be able to tell my friends.'”  So they recorded JT adding backup vocals to one of the album’s songs.

“He nailed it,” Grohl says, adding, tongue in cheek, “I’m telling you — the guy’s going somewhere.”

Now, Dave doesn’t explicitly state that Justin is the mysterious “biggest pop star in the world” that he previously spoke about, but he’s already said it isn’t Taylor Swift or Adele, so there aren’t many candidates left.  Beatles legend Paul McCartney is on the record too, but he’s playing drums.

We’ll find out all the guests when Concrete and Gold is released September 15.
