Rachel Platten's new album explores “darker places” in her mind

Columbia RecordsThanks to hits like “Fight Song” and “Stand by You” — and the fact that she always seems to be flashing her gorgeous smile —  you’d be forgiven for thinking that Rachel Platten a relentlessly upbeat person.  But she says her upcoming new album will show fans that she’s not Little Miss Sunshine all the time.

“I think maybe a misconception people have about me from ‘Fight Song’ is that I’m always encouraging and always in a good mood and always positive,” Rachel tells Billboard. “And that’s beautiful, I love that people think that, but it is not true.”

She adds, “This album allowed me to go into some of the darker places in my mind, just because I needed the release and I needed that freedom to be honest with what I was feeling…I cannot wait for the world to hear what I’ve been cooking up.”

Describing her new music as “complex in a positive way,” Rachel adds that it’s also “super-emotional.”  But having said that, she admits that the first single, “Broken Glass,” continues the positive message theme of “Fight Song.”

Rachel explains, “Even though we have a long way to go to get equality between men and women, we’re making progress, and when we lift each other up, that’s dope. ‘Broken Glass’ is kind of about that message.”

“I felt like I wanted to continue and do my part to give a message of hope through music,” she adds. “And promote girl power.”

So far, there’s no title or release date for new album, the follow-up to Rachel’s major label debut, Wildfire.
