Lady Gaga's Netflix doc is “true and honest,” shows “heavy personal issues”

Courtesy NetflixReady to get up close and personal with Lady Gaga?  The singer released some teaser clips from her new Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two last week, and now she’s spilling even more secrets from the film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gaga and the film’s director Chris Moukarbel reveal they started filming in June 2016 and captured Gaga at the start of her Joanne era.

“The film follows her through her creative process in writing the record Joanne,” Moukarbel says. “We see her shooting American Horror Story and coping with some heavy personal issues, including chronic body pain that she’s been dealing with for five years. We’re also alongside her as she prepares for the Super Bowl halftime show.”

Gaga says she was in control of what they could and couldn’t film, but don’t expect a puff piece — the singer says, “It’s intended just to be true and honest.”

“[You will see] a woman who’s an artist, creates all day, thinks all day, and also has the experiences [as] both an artist and a celebrity,” she tells EW. “Those two things collide for me, and you’ll see how they’re conflicted,”

Unlike most music documentaries, there won’t be a lot of commentary from people in Gaga’s life.

“I didn’t do any interviews with people around her,” Moukarbel says. “If they happened to be present while I was shooting, then they might end up in the film, but it was really about her surroundings at that moment.”

The singer’s father, Joe Germanotta, and Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, who collaborated with Gaga on the song “Hey Girl,” do make appearances in the film, though.

Gaga: Five Foot Two will premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8 and will launch on Netflix September 22.
