Jason Derulo says new album, “777,” will be “a lot more mature” and “vulnerable”

Jason Derulo‘s recent hit, “Swalla,” was a big success, but let’s face it: the racy track didn’t have a lot of emotional depth.  But Jason says his upcoming album will show a different side of him, and be, as he puts it, “a lot more mature.”

“It’s exciting. It’s a new phase for me and a lot more mature, I think,” he tells ABC Radio. “It has different vibes. You have the party songs that wanna get you up and dancing, but you also have the very emotional, vulnerable side of the album that a lot of people haven’t seen yet.”

The first step in this new phase is Jason’s new single, “If I’m Lucky,”  about reconnecting with a former lover in the afterlife.

“At this point in my career, I’m only releasing songs that speak to me and are fulfilling to my life and my artistry personally,” he explains. “It’s not me chasing the hit anymore. I’m just putting out material that I actually love.”

But sometimes chasing a hit — and finding one — can work out pretty well, as Jason discovered this summer with “Swalla.”

“Going around the world and performing ‘Swalla’ was a lot of fun,” he tells ABC Radio. “I didn’t know what to expect with that song.”

He reveals, “I actually held it in my pocket for about two years…I actually didn’t know what fans were gonna say when I released it.  And, y’know, five-times platinum later, it’s been an incredible, incredible journey.”

Jason says the new album will be out before March.  As far as the title, he tells Billboard, “It’s called 777, because that’s jackpot. I recently reached 100 million in sales, so it feels like I hit the jackpot, like my life is a dream come true.”
