Universal Music Latino / Raymond Braun / SchoolBoy / Def Jam / UMLE / Republic Records“Slowly” but surely, “Despacito” has racked up week after week at #1, and now the song has hit the magic number: 16.
The Luis Fonsi/Daddy Yankee/Justin Bieber collabo has now topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 16weeks, which means it’s tied for the title of the longest-running #1 in history. The only other song that’s ever spent that much time on top is “One Sweet Day,” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. They set the record back in 1996, and they held it for more than 21 years.
If “Despacito” can hang on for one more week, it’ll set the all-time record. However, Taylor Swift’s new single “Look What You Made Me Do” may dash those hopes, since it’s likely to debut at #1.
And speaking of longevity records, Ed Sheeran has now set a new one: his hit “Shape of You” has been in the top 10 of the Hot 100 for 33 weeks. He was previously tied for the record at 32, along with LeAnn Rimes‘ “How Do I Live” and The Chainsmokers‘ “Closer.”
