Syco/Epic RecordsIt’s a big weekend for Fifth Harmony. Their self-titled album — their first as a quartet — arrives today, and Sunday night, they’ll perform for the first time at the MTV Video Music Awards, where they’re nominated in a few categories for their video “Down.”
The girls say the new album — their third — marks the first time they’ve really taken creative control of their music. They co-wrote many of the tracks, and they had a huge say in choosing the ones that they didn’t.
“We definitely put a lot of our emotions and experiences in this album, and I kind of guess nothing was really off limits,” explains Ally Brooke Hernandez. “I mean, we get very vulnerable, we get personal, and we have a lot of fun songs in there, too. It’s definitely a versatile album.”
The group will be performing the album’s first single, “Down,” with rapper Gucci Mane. Lauren Jauregui says the song’s become somewhat of an anthem for the girls.
“I mean, when you first hear it you probably interpret it as a love song, but when we’re performing it..we’re like, ‘I’m gon’ keep lovin’ you,’ and we look at each other when we say that,” Lauren tells ABC Radio.
“So it’s kinda like, for us, it’s about each other, and being there for each other, and holding each other down,” she adds. “And getting through all the bulls***.”
Check out Fifth Harmony Sunday night, August 27 on the MTV VMAs, which air at 8 p.m. ET live from Inglewood, California.
