It seemed a no-brainer, though it was only a rumor. Now, it’s been confirmed — Taylor Swift will indeed debut the video for her just-released single, “Look What You Made Me Do,” at this Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards.
It seemed a no-brainer given the timing of the first release from Taylor’s forthcoming Reputation album — just before midnight Thursday night, fewer than 72 hours before the VMAs. Add to that the fact that so far, we’ve only got a lyric video for the single, and it’s unlikely Taylor and her people would allow something as big as the VMAs to pass without taking advantage of that world stage for the video reveal.
What remains to be seen, however, is whether Taylor will also use that stage to bury the hatchet with one of her favorite feuding partners, Katy Perry. The VMAs seem a perfect opportunity for that also to happen, given that Katy’s hosting them. She’s also on record as saying she’d done with the feud, and wishes Taylor well.
While we haven’t heard the same public sentiment yet from Taylor, “Look What You Made Me Do” includes some pretty obvious jabs at her other feuding partner, Kanye West. That spat began when Kanye famously stole Taylor’s thunder by commandeering the stage at the 2009 VMAs during Taylor’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video, to declare that Beyonce deserved the win more.
So far, all anyone at MTV will say for the record is that there are no plans for a Taylor appearance or performance at the VMAs. Then again, we only learned this morning about her Sunday night video premiere — and a lot can happen in three days.
The MTV Video Music Awards air Sunday night beginning at 8:00 ET/PT.
