Demi Lovato joins James Corden for Divas Then/Divas Now Riff-Off

Terence Patrick/CBS Demi Lovato was a guest on The Late Late Show with James Corden Wednesday night. After his monologue, cherubic, music-loving host James Corden started talking about how much he enjoys old school pop and R&B divas. Corden then took a jab at current singers saying, “They don’t make them like that anymore. Do they? Divas back then were just better than divas are today.”

Suddenly, Lovato appeared from the side of the stage and she and Corden went back and forth about divas today and the divas of yesterday. Finally, the multi-platinum artist said, “Well, OK, if you think divas back then were better, and I think divas today are better, why don’t we just settle this tonight?”

Soon they were joined by a capella group Level and the Divas Then/Divas Now Riff-Off was underway.

Lovato wowed with a cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” which Corden followed his take on Ike and Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High.” Lovato wasn’t impressed and said so. Corden told her she needed to learn some respect and then went into Aretha Franklin’s most famous song, complete with falsetto.

Lovato belted out Katy Perry’s “Roar” and then did her own “Heart Attack” before Corden admitted defeat. Finally, they came together in a duet on Gloria Gaynor’s anthem “I Will Survive” as the show went to commercial.

The Late Late Show with James Corden airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on CBS.
