Why Demi Lovato feels like she's five years old

Getty Images via ABCDemi Lovato will be 25 in August, but she told Ellen DeGeneres on Wednesday that she actually feels like she’s five years old. Why? Because five years ago, she finally straightened out her life.

Demi recently marked her fifth year of sobriety, and she told Ellen during an appearance on her show, “I feel like the day that I got sober is the day that I actually started living, so I like to call myself five years old.”

She added, “I’ve decided to be open about my story and share everything that I’ve been through because it helps others.” By way of illustration, Demi noted, “I’ve had several people come up to me and say, ‘Hey, my dad got sober because you did’ or ‘I got sober because you did,’ and it’s just so meaningful and impactful to me, I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Demi appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her upcoming role in the movie The Smurfs: The Lost Village, but she also spoke about being in love with her boyfriend, MMA Bellator fighter Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos.

“So you’re happy,” said Ellen.  “I’m very happy,” agreed Demi. “You have a boyfriend you have a puppy life is good,” Ellen continued.

“Life is really good,” agreed Demi. “And I’m a Smurf!”

Smurfs: The Lost Village opens on Friday.
