Ellie Goulding describes new album as a “return” to her own voice

Conor McDonnellSince her 2015 album Delirium, Ellie Goulding has been releasing one-off collabs – the most recent one being “Close to Me” with Diplo and Swae Lee. But now she’s gearing up to release her follow-up album, which will be out sometime this year.

Ellie tells Billboard her new release will move away from the collaborations and will be more focused on her own voice.

“This album is definitely a return of some sorts, because it’s very much written by me,” she says. “It’s much less collaborative than the last album. It has much more clarity and space.”

She adds, “This album is the album of my voice, and my songwriting, and that’s kind of what I’ve always wanted to do.”

As for the album’s sound, Ellie says there will be electronic and hip-hop influences, as well as “the music that I grew up listening to and that I’ll never be able to shake off.”  That music ranges from classical, to dance music, to songs by Joni Mitchell and Bjork.

“I’ve always had my own interpretation of what’s happening in pop music,” she says.
