First Weezer, now Pitbull remakes Toto's “Africa”

ABC/Eric McCandlessEarlier this year, Weezer scored a huge hit with their version of Toto‘s 1982 soft-rock classic “Africa.” Now Pitbull is trying his hand at the same song.

Pitbull’s version is actually called “Ocean to Ocean,” and it appears on the soundtrack of the upcoming superhero flick Aquaman.  However, the pre-chorus and chorus, performed by a singer named Rhea, are identical to those of Toto’s original hit.

In the movie, the song plays during a scene where Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa, crosses the Sahara Desert.  Which is — y’know — in Africa.

“They tried to get rid of me/But from ocean to ocean/They are gonna have to deal with me,” Pitbull raps. “From ocean to ocean, sea to sea/I’m something that you gotta see.”

In a statement to People magazine, Pitbull explains why his version of the tune is called “Ocean to Ocean.”

“The ocean, the sea and any body of water, to me, is true freedom,” says Mr. Worldwide. “The ocean has always been the border from where my parents came from Cuba and the United States, which gives us freedom. That’s why I respect water. Bottom line: water gives us freedom.”
