Zara Larsson says she's not a “bad feminist” for singing “Ruin My Life”

Ruben ChamorroZara Larsson wants to be able to speak her mind through her music without being labelled a “bad feminist.”

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, the Swedish singer discusses the backlash she received for her latest single, “Ruin My Life,” in which she sings about a toxic relationship. Some accused her of promoting a destructive lifestyle.

“I’m such an outspoken feminist, quite a radical one with my opinions,” Zara tells the mag. “But we’ve all been there — at least my friends have and everyone I know — where you know you shouldn’t go back to that person, whatever, I’m still going to text this person at 3 a.m. after three drinks.”

Zara wrote the song after walking home from a regrettable night at an ex’s place. “I was a bit obsessed with this guy who was so bad for me,” she admits.

“I get the idea of wanting to only do really powerful, uplifting songs towards women, but I’m a human being and I can get my heart broken,” she says. “I should be able to express my feelings by being me, and hopefully other girls can relate, without that making me a bad feminist.”

Zara promises her next song will be a bit more empowering.

“It’s called ‘Don’t Worry About Me’ and is kind of like ‘Ruin My Life’ part two,” she teases. “It’s the moment when you wake up feeling like, ‘I’m so over you right now. Have a good life.”
