“The Voice” recap: The 24 remaining artists perform for a spot in the top 12

Trae Patton/NBCThe live playoffs began on Monday night’s The Voice, with the six artists each from Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Jennifer Hudson‘s teams performing for a spot in the top 12.

America had the chance to vote for their favorite artist from each team, with the four top artists earning the most votes advancing to the top 12. The results will be announced on Tuesday’s show, where the remaining artists will get another shot at advancing.

Host Carson Daly opened the show by acknowledging last week’s mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, California, as well as the wildfires, currently raging in Southern California. “On behalf of everybody at NBC and our Voice family, our thoughts are with everybody affected,“ he said. “And to the first responders, fighting these terrible fires, thank you.”

Daly also told viewers interested in helping that they could go to RedCross.org, or ChristinaGrimmieFoundation.org, which helps victims of gun violence. Christina Grimmie, a season 6 finalist, died in 2016 after being shot while signing autographs following a concert performance in Orlando, Florida.

First up were the six members of Team Blake:

Michael Lee kicked things off with Delbert McClinton‘s “Every Time I Roll the Dice.” He was followed by country singer Dave Fenley with Willie Nelson‘s “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground”; Natasha GreyCloud belting out Ariana Grande‘s “God Is a Woman”; Chris Kroeze, covering Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”; and Funsho, tackling Charlie Puth’s “How Long.” Kirk Jay rounded things out, with Diamond Rio’s “One More Day.”

The six artists from Team Kelly were next:

Abbie Cates, 17, was up first with her take on Emeli Sandé’s “Next to Me.” Keith Paluso was next with Adele’s “Someone Like You”; 15-year-old Sarah Grace, playing the organ, covered “When Something Is Wrong with My Baby,” by Sam & Dave. Zaxai followed with Leo Sayer’s “When I Need You”; and 16-year-old Chevel Shepherd tackling “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘bout the Good Old Days),” by The Judds. Powerhouse vocalist Kymberli Joye closed things out with Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive.”

Team Adam’s six artists followed:

Steve Memmolo got the ball rolling, singing “More Today than Yesterday,” by Spiral Staircase. Next up, Beaumont, Texas’ DeAndre Nico put his spin on John Legend’s “Ordinary People”; RADHA delivered a powerful rendition of ZAYN’s “Dusk Till Dawn”; blues singer Kameron Marlowe covered Waylon Jennings’ “I Ain’t Living Long Like This”; and 18-year-old surfer from Hawaii Tyke James delivered Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” 14-year-old Reagan Strange wrapped things up for Team Adam with “Worth It,” by The Voice season 4 champ Danielle Bradbery.

Finally, Team Jennifer’s six artists took the stage:

First up, was Atlanta soul singer Patrique Fortson, singing “Ain’t Nobody,” by Rufus and Chaka Khan. He was followed by MaKenzie Thomas with a fiery cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me” — which drew two shoes from JHud; Los Angeles worship leader Franc West played piano and sang Timbaland’s “Apologize”; R&B powerhouse Sandyredd belted “No More Drama,” by Mary J. Blige; Colton Smith covered Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa’s “Scared to be Lonely.” This season’s youngest contestant, Kennedy Holmes, closed out the night with Beyoncé’s “Halo.”

The Voice returns with a one-hour episode on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
