Michael Furlonger“Friends” singer Anne-Marie‘s been opening for her friend Ed Sheeran on his current North American stadium tour, but in between dates, she’s also headlining her own tour…in much smaller venues, of course. Anne-Marie says it’s been an interesting experience to do both simultaneously.
“It’s really intriguing and interesting experiencing both at the same time,” she tells ABC Radio. “‘Cause being a support act is quite a scary thing, and the differences in [venue] size…it’s just so different. But it’s been amazing.”
What’s also been amazing is hearing 60,000 people in a stadium sing along with her with she performs her platinum hit “Friends.”
Yeah, they’re like ‘Oh, that’s her!'” she laughs. “It’s amazing, it really is, to see people singing it. Just being in other countries and them singing the lyrics to that song, it feels good, especially when you write it. It makes it an extra proud moment for myself, just like, ‘I can’t believe other people are singing what I’ve written!’ So yeah, it’s cool.”
And when she performs her own shows, Anne-Marie says she’s been having the best time because it’s the first time she’s toured while having an album out — an album that’s gone gold, to be exact. “People know every song,” she gushes.
But whether she’s playing for 600 people or 60,000, Anne-Marie says she doesn’t change her performance style.
“It’s the same every time,” she tells ABC Radio. “I don’t wanna…make it less intimate because it’s so big, so I try and have the conversation with the crowd and do the same as I do in the intimate venues. The only difference is, really, the set length.”
