The Chainsmokers’ Drew Taggart says he wrote “This Feeling” after a long battle with depression

ABC/Paula LoboThe Chainsmokers’ latest collab with country singer Kelsea Ballerini, “This Feeling,” is already on its way to becoming a hit, but for Drew Taggart, the meaning behind the song goes much deeper.

In a lengthy message on Instagram, Drew details his battle with depression at the height of The Chainsmokers’ fame, and reveals the new track was the first song he wrote when his wave of depression lifted.

“Songwriting is my therapy,” he begins. “i dealt with depression for what most would call the height of the chainsmokers career thus far. you’d think that an artist getting their first massive break and seeing success in a career they love would have no problems, but that’s the funny thing about depression. it’s doesn’t matter what you’ve accomplished, because it attacks how you feel about it.”

He says that he didn’t start to feel better until he began channeling his feelings into his songs, which explains why The Chainsmokers’ music took a “sudden dark introspective turn” with songs like “Sick Boy” and “Everybody Hates Me.”

Drew continues, “’This Feeling’ is the first song i wrote when i came out of my depressed state for the first time. it’s a song about following your heart even when people don’t believe in you.”

He concludes, “mentally i’m in a good place right now. i’m in love with my friends and family and thank god everyday that i get to write songs for a living. i hope y’all enjoy this one.”
