Normani talks “Love Lies” success, status of her own love life

Brendan ForbesAfter her duet with Khalid, “Love Lies,” reached number one on Billboard‘s Pop Songs chart this week, Normani chatted with Rolling Stone about the “pivotal” moment in her career and taking a risk with her first big solo endeavor.

She tells the mag that she had “some uncertainty” about releasing “Love Lies,” because the sound was so different from what her Fifth Harmony fans were used to.

“It’s a big deal putting out music that’s different from what everybody’s used to hearing from you, or seeing you as,” she says. “[‘Love Lies’] is a slower, mellower song among all the big, up-tempo hip-hop records right now that are really dominating, like Migos. But I think it is a real moment for R&B…and I’m excited to be a part of that.”

Normani says she also related to the song’s lyrics, about someone trying to figure out their relationship status with another person.

“For me, I know that there’s been plenty of times I’ll either be interested in someone, and it’s like, ‘OK is this going to be reciprocated?’ Just dealing with that uncertainty…” she says.

As she focuses on putting the finishing touches on her solo album, her own love life is taking a backseat for the moment. She says she believes in monogamy, but is not a fan of blind dates.

“Honestly? You’d be surprised; I haven’t been on many dates,” she says. “I don’t hang out much. I’m in Pinkberry and the studio. That’s pretty much it.”
