The Chainsmokers are up for the Best Dance Video trophy at Monday night’s MTV Video Music Awards for their clip for “Everybody Hates Me.” It’s the duo’s fifth nomination for this prize but in the past couple of years, they’ve won some 30 awards, including a Grammy. Even so, the duo’s Drew Taggart says he and musical partner Alex Pall still aren’t used to music biz accolades.
“I mean, it’s all pretty surreal that we’re nominated and winning any awards at all,” Drew tells ABC Radio. “So, yeah, every time we get up there, we’re like, ‘Are we imposters? Are we really supposed to be up here?'”
Regardless, Drew says “It’d be amazing” to win the Moonman. The competition is stiff though: The Chainsmokers are up against videos by the late deejay Avicii, plus Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Zedd and Marshmello. But what’s the best dance music video ever? Alex and Drew agree.
“Definitely a Michael Jackson video,” Alex says. “I mean, if you consider that…dance music…I don’t know if you mean just ‘dance music’ or just dancing in general…”
“Michael Jackson then, for sure,” Drew agrees.
However, if he was limiting himself to videos by acts that specifically make dance music, Alex says he’d choose “Call On Me” by Eric Prydz. That 2012 video, which was wildly popular, has been called the “Sexiest Music Video of All Time” by Vice Media.
The clip is a spoof of a scene in the 1985 movie Perfect and features women in an exercise class, wearing extremely revealing 1980s aerobics outfits and performing sexually suggestive workout moves — much to the delight of the lone man in the class.
The MTV Video Music Awards air live from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall at 9 p.m ET/PT Monday night.
