Avicii's family says his funeral will be private

Sean ErikssonWhile many of Avicii’s friends and colleagues publicly shouted out the late EDM superstar at the Billboard Awards on Monday, his official goodbye will not take place in front of cameras.

In a statement to ABC News, Avicii’s family says that the DJ, born Tim Bergling, will be laid to rest in a private funeral.  A statement from the family reads, “The Bergling family has now confirmed that the funeral will be private, in the presence of the people who were closest to Tim. They kindly ask media to respect this. There is no additional information forthcoming.”

Avicii was found dead in a hotel room in the Middle Eastern country of Oman on April 20.  In a statement, his family seemed to suggest that he took his own life, though they never explicitly confirmed that.  Authorities also ruled out foul play.

“Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions,” the family said in their statement at the time. “When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most — music… He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace.”

Avicii stopped touring in 2016 due to his poor health, including pancreatitis and gall bladder and pancreas surgery.
