The Weeknd made a whole album of upbeat songs that we'll never get to hear

Image Group LA/ABCThe Weeknd put out his so-called “breakup album” My Dear Melancholy back in March, but it turns out the singer originally had a much happier project in mind.

“Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done,” The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, tells TIME magazine. “Which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life.”

While The Weeknd won’t confirm if that album was written about his relationship with Selena Gomez, it was presumably influenced by their happier times together. He says the album was “very upbeat” and “beautiful,” but adds that he’s now moved past that part of his life and confirms he’s now — “without a doubt” — single.

“I don’t want to perform something that I don’t feel,” he says, adding that the upbeat album will “never” see the light of day.

As for My Dear Melancholy, he says recording that EP was “therapeutic.”
