Julia Michaels on possible Grammy win: “I'll wear it around my neck!”

Catie LaffoonJulia Michaels is one of the breakout stars of 2017. She’s just received an American Music Awards nomination for New Artist of the Year, but the idea of scoring a Grammy nod for Best New Artist is what really has her excited.

Julia graces the cover of Billboard magazine along with SZA and Khalid, who are also being mentioned as possible Grammy Best New Artist nominees.  Asked where she’d display her trophy if she manages to take one home at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on January 28, Julia says, “I have a music room in my house; a very small, cute little place where I keep my piano and my little leather sofa. So I’d probably put it right there.”

“Or buy a chain and wear it around my neck,” she adds.

Julia also says she’ll root for Ed Sheeran if he gets a Grammy Album of the Year nomination for Divide, which she worked on.  “He has always done things that are really true to him,” she notes.

As she’s made the transition from behind-the-scenes writer of hits for artists like Justin Bieber to fully fledged pop star, Julia tells Billboard that the best advice she’s gotten from another artist was, ironically, from a group who recently lost a member to suicide: Linkin Park.

Julia co-wrote LP’s hit “Heavy,” and she recalls, “When Chester [Bennington], Mike [Shinoda] and Brad [Delson] were in the studio, they were having so much fun…they’ve been doing this for years and would just go in there and act like it was their first time in the studio. Being around that was so eye-opening.”

“Before I go onstage, I f*** panic,” she adds. “But I’ve been thinking about how there is so much fun to be had.”
